Vertical lifting platforms for disabled people, portable ramps

This guidance assists in the selection of a suitable powered lifting platform
When selecting a powered lifting platform, consider if the needs of the user are likely to change in the future. Select a lifting platform with a rated load that is capable carrying the maximum foreseeable load.
Where either manual or automatic operation are optionally available for devices such as doors, barriers or hinged platforms, consider which is more appropriate for the user.

1. Control (operating) devices
Consider the position, type and number of operating controls that would suit users with different disabilities.
Consider whether a key switch, electronic card or similar means is necessary to restrict the use of lifting platforms to authorised users.

2. Location of the lifting platform
Check if the proposed location of the lifting platform is suitable. For example, check the following:
a) that the installation will not obstruct normal activities in and around the building,
b) that the site location proposed supporting structure is strong enough to support the lifting platform,
c) that adequate wheelchair manoeuvring space will be available at each landing level served (approx. 1500 x 1500 mm).

3. Electrical supply and lighting
Ensure that a suitable electrical supply is available.
Ensure that adequate lighting is available on the landings.

4. Operating/emergency instructions:
Ensure that operation of the lifting platform is demonstrated to the user and that the user is fully instructed on its safe use including
a. instructions on the correct emergency operating procedure in case of breakdown,
b. the names, addresses and telephone numbers of persons to contact for emergency services.

5. Alarm system:
Consideration should be given to the desirability of providing an alarm system.

The types LP1, 5, and 8 can also be recessed into the floor. The ramp can then be shorter. Easier for the user.
The types LP1 to LP12 can be installed both indoors and outdoors. If outdoors, proper drainage of the installation pit is required.
For lifting heights above 500 mm, LP5 and LP8 are equipped with a lockable door at the top access point.

Choose the right type:
– the type depends of the capabilities of the user – maybe of the caregiver – and depends of the available space, the load and the height difference.
– a pair of small ramps or one wide ramp? If the wheels are not in line like on 3-wheel scooters, you should use either 3 small ramps or one wide ramp,
– a narrow or wide plain ramp longer than 1,5 m can hardly be transported in your car. choose a foldable or telescopic ramp,
– a telescopic ramp can be adjusted to a shorter length for lower heights. A foldable ramp will always need the full length,
– a “Lite” ramp weighs at most only 9,5 kg and is of course much easier to set up by the user or the companion. The maximum length is however limited to 2,05 m and consequently to 0,4 m heights.

Take the proper length:
– always select the longest possible ramp: the longer the ramp, the less the gradient to overcome.
– for an independent user of manual wheelchair we recommend a maximum slope of 1:7.
– for a manual wheelchair pushed by a helper or an electric wheelchair, the maximum slope should be 1:5.
Example: for 200 mm height difference, the ramp length should be 1 m (1:5) or 1,4 m (1:7).
